A Guide to CCTV and Signage in the UK

This article is a guide to the rules surrounding CCTV and signage in both domestic and commercial (Public) settings in the UK. There are a variety of rules that should be followed if you own a security system and they differ based on circumstance and location.

Did you know that if your footage is not labelled correctly it may be discounted in court as evidence due to the correspondence not knowing that they were being recorded in the first place.

Using CCTV in domestic or private locations

While operating CCTV on private property there are fewer obligations than a public setting. As long as your CCTV doesn't extend beyond your property boundaries, signage is not a legal requirement. However, it is advised that you have some form of signage to inform visitors to your property that they are on CCTV.

If your cameras cover any public areas such as footpaths, roads or common areas you legally have to have signage that informs passers by that they are being recorded. It is important to make sure that your CCTV is being operated responsibly and respects the privacy of the public. You should ensure that your footage is only being used for the intention that it was installed.

Using CCTV in commercial or public locations

Images are classed as personal data and information so GDPR rules apply to anyone operating CCTV in a public setting. If you operate CCTV in a commercial property you must display and inform people that they are being recorded - typically through signage which must be clearly visible and readable.

You may also be required to pay a data protection fee however there are some exceptions to this rule click here to find out more. Additionally, you must ensure that access to the footage is limited to only those that need to view the CCTV in order to ensure that the footage is only being used for it's original intended purpose (this should be clearly labelled on your signage)
